Hello
my name is Douglas Deprest. I am from Roseville, Michigan which is two miles
outside of Detroit. I am a junior here at BGSU, majoring in Sports Management.
I used to be in the Navy, and when I decided that I was not going to make it a
career, I wanted to find something that would really interest me. After doing
some research over the internet I found that BGSU Sports Management program was
one of the best. I have always had a passion for sports, starting for my love
of the Michigan Wolverines. I did not start playing football till the seventh
grade and played throughout high school at Harper Woods Notre Dame. I also
played baseball in high school and started playing golf when I was 12. I walked
on to the football program at Division II Ferris State University which is in
Big Rapids, Michigan. After playing one year I transferred out of FSU and into
Eastern Michigan but did not continue playing football. Currently I love to
play golf, tennis and intramural football.
The
male athlete I said I would pay to see is Jack Nicklaus, retired professional
golfer. Jack holds the all-time record for major championships won at 18. He is
the greatest golfer who ever played and I would love to see him play at The
Masters tournament in his prime.
The
female athlete I would pay to see is Martina Navratilova former tennis great. She
won 18 grand slam titles, 31 doubles titles and 10 mixed doubles titles. She
was dominating at Wimbledon and I would love to see her play against Chris
Evert whom their battles were legendary.
I
look forward to this class this semester and hope everyone enjoys my posts.
Hi Douglas,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you read my earlier post about my Dad being in the Navy, but he was an anti-submarine pilot at the end of World War II. What was your job in the Navy? I have heard of Ferris State because I think they have a big program in tennis. Do you know about that? Were you in the Sport Management program at Eastern Michigan? I know someone who teaches there but thought it was a relatively new program. I can definitely appreciate the two athletes you would have paid to see compete in their sports. Although I was around when Nicklaus was competing, I did not see him because I was playing tennis. But I actually got to see Martina Navratilova play against Chris Evert the first time that they played - in Akron, OH, in 1973. On that occasion, Chrissie beat her in straight sets, but Martina held the final edge 43-37. It's pretty amazing that they played each other that many times! I'm glad you can appreciate athletes from an earlier era. I look forward to reading more of your entries.

Dr. Spencer,
DeleteI was an Operation Specialist on board a destroyer called the USS Russell out of Pearl Harbor, HI. I was a Business major at FSU, I know they have a big golf program, and they are in the same league as BGSU in hockey. Again I was a Business major at EMU and when I went there I do not believe they had a Sports Management program yet. I got to see Jack play at the Senior US Open back in the 90's when it was in Michigan. I did not realize they played that many times, but I knew they had battles.
